Swatch Guide

The Guide is nice. However, for people who are somewhat ignorant about download, type of paper, etc this was a disaster. I couldn’t find where the download went and downloads were counting off while I tried to figure out where it was. Then when I finally got one to print it printed on regular printer paper and when I painted the little barrel I don’t think it was a true color. Bottom line give detail instructions for those out there who don’t know what they’re doing.

Hi Lynn! I'm so sorry you had trouble with the file. I do have videos for using the Swatch Guide, but I'm not sure off the top of my head which ones {if any} I linked to in the store listing. I did provide instructions on the printout itself, you are so right that it would be nice to have instructions for downloading and where to find the file once it's been installed on the computer/device. I apologize that I didn't provide better instructions!

In order to help you better with another part of your review, I'm not sure I understand what you meant by the part where you said, 'When I painted the little barrel, I don't think it was a true color' so I will apologize if I am not responding correctly with some advice.

I made the paint pots dark gray instead of black on the Swatch Guide, so when you paint over them you can see if the paint is opaque, transparent or translucent {semi-transparent}. My thoughts are, if the paint doesn't cover gray, it will not cover black! Thankfully, most companies now will use dark gray over black to print their kits.

However, some printers may use a dye ink that can smear when printing gray, which might affect the paint color if it's thin or too wet. {Although I don't think that is necessarily what happened here.}

Another tip I can offer for the best results is that although you can print on any material you'd like, sometimes plain paper doesn't give the most accurate results. It's thin and porous. The paint can seep into the surface, and that can also affect the outcome. The swatches are designed to give us an idea of what we are working with before we start our project...to help save us valuable time...but I definitely don't want it to be more trouble than it's worth for anyone!

I also don't want a customer to think they have to spend a fortune to use any of my digital guides, but if you can ever 'splurge' on some Inkjet Printable Canvas, it is a game changer for the swatches! I'll add a link for that in the product description. When you use that material, you are testing the paints on a surface most similar to what you're using in 'real life', and the results will be the most accurate.

Some other substrates I love to print and swatch on are matte presentation paper, which can be very affordable and great for other printable household projects too.

In the meantime, I will try to make time to update the store listing and the file to include better instructions for downloading and using the guide. Thank you for your purchase and feedback!

So helpful!

I am so glad Melanie thought to create these. It is really helpful to show how opaque the colors are before painting them, but it is also a good reference to keep with the paints when you are done. There are so many reasons to use these!
